Curved Ceiling Lamp with Four Opal Glass Shades, Europe 1940s
About the Item
Materials were key elements of modern lighting design, and nothing speaks mid-century modern more than the combination of metals, such as brass and glass. At its most basic level, mid-century modern designs are known for their sleek lines with organic shapes, using new materials and methods to reimagine traditional pieces.
This ceiling lamp has a traditional looking structure with a surprise element: the long, strongly curved arms. As the opal glass shades are rather large, this main design element remains subtle, but from the right angle, it becomes visible and gives this model a characteristic look. The combination of brass and glass was especially characteristic of Scandinavian designers of the era as the brass shines beautifully when the light is on. While this model’s design revolves around the curved plated aluminium arms, its four glass globes are also arresting. They hang from the arms organically, and consequently accentuate each other’s shape. To leave the focus on the arms and globes, the canopy, the shade holders and the tubing are all quite understated. As a result, the design is well-balanced. The organic look is further enhanced by the downward facing globes that brighten up the brass’s colour when lit, and distribute the light evenly. The design is very successful at mixing traditional and modern elements whilst staying true to the guiding principles of early mid-century modernism.
This ceiling lamp has a unique and stylish design that aims for functionality just as much as it aims for aesthetic appeal. Mid-century modern design hasn’t been bested by any other movement since its heyday, and it remains the style of our own time. This is because - as this ceiling lamp shows - the pieces in this style still look contemporary.
