French Figural Bronze Chandelier with Italian Putti's Cherubs, circa 1910

About the Item

Early 20th century French bronze figural chandelier with 3 cherubs or Putto. Three hand blown milk glass shades have been replaced with newer versions. Bulbs are European thread, 3 bulbs included. The more commonly found form putti is the plural of the Italian word putto. The Italian word comes from the Latin word putus, meaning "boy" or "child". Today, in Italian, putto means either toddler winged angel or, rarely, toddler boy. Cherub- A winged creature represented over 90 times in the Bible as attending on God, later seen as the second highest order of angels, ranked above thrones and below seraphim. First mention is in Genesis 3:24. A statue or other depiction of such a being, typically in the form of a winged child. A person, especially a child, seen as being particularly innocent or angelic.
