Jugend Ceiling Lamp in Patinated Brass and Glass, Europe early 20th century

About the Item

Around the turn of the 20th century the new style Jugend was introduced around Europe. The name comes from the German word for “youth”, but in the rest of Europe it was called Art Nouveau, the “new art”. It was a sharp aesthetic break from the previous styles and brought a completely new language of form inspired by the organic softness of nature. This early 20th century ceiling lamp is a unique example of the style with all its main characteristics, including ornamentation in the form of nature inspired shapes and decorative elements, and defined curves. Lighting models in the style often feature hand beaten brass bodies, which is likely the case here as well. The body consists of carefully bent lines that were very difficult to achieve by machinery at the time; the artistic value of this model is thus raised even higher. From the flowery canopy, slip ring and shade holders to the characteristic, twisted leaves enclosing a spiralling element towards the bottom, and flower shaped glass shades this lamp has plenty to offer visually. Preceding the streamlined modernism of the mid-century era, Jugend allowed a lot more in terms of ornamentation without compromising on quality. The milky glass shades create a cosy effect when lit, defining the shape of the shades even more. Material-wise, the most stunning element remains the patinated brass that showcases its many shades, creating an interesting colour play. Its colouring ranges from yellow gold and silver all the way to almost red and blue, adding to the already impressive list of unique elements of the design. Entirely unique in its appearance, this ceiling lamp was most likely a one-off creation by a master craftsman. Its creative ornamentation and traces of handwork tell tales about an era that was full of innovation and saw the birth of some of the most exciting design styles. Today, this lamp is just as appealing, sure to bring visual interest into any space. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The brass has a beautiful patina. The best thing about hanging ceiling lights - besides their stylish look - is that they are the best option to make interiors appear more spacious. They can be used them to concentrate light, or to just add an accent to the room. This lamp’s design revolves around the clear glass sphere. Glass is the perfect material for light shades as it allows light to pass through it. This means that glass light shades offer almost as much illumination as a bare light bulb. The result is bright and vibrant light, and this is exactly what this model offers. The design’s main point is its effective simpleness, free of any unnecessary detail. The uncluttered look leaves the attention on the materials and on functionality that the form is also in service of. As such, the canopy, the rod, and the shade holder are all quite understated, accentuating the glass shade instead. The pairing of glass and brass is perhaps the most iconic material duo in mid-century modern European lighting...
