About the Item

Large chromium plated pendant by Kazuo Motozawa for Staff Leuchten, Germany. Founded in 1923, Yamagiwa has become a leading Japanese manufacturer of innovative and sophisticated lighting fixtures. Over the last decades the company employed several outstanding designers. To name a few: Ettore Sottsass, Shiro Kuramata, Toyo Ito and Tokujin Yoshioka. The pendant for sale was designed, circa 1970 by Kazuo Motozawa (Saitama 1945) as part of the Saturno-Aureola series. For the European market Yamagiwa licensed the production rights of these models to Staff and Schwarz, a German company which had already worked with Japanese lighting designer Motoko Ishii during the 1960s. Upon its introduction in Europe in 1971, the range was awarded with the prestigious IF Design Award. The Saturno-Aureola models, which are all fitted with distinctive chromium plated rings, became a great success. The model offered here was the tallest pendant from the entire range, consisting of no less than 37 rings and it's still very hard to find. And just like all other lamps from the series, it radiates a pleasant dim light through its louvers. The fixture has been rewired to European standards with an internally reinforced cable and comes with an matching canopy. Good condition; but some louvres slightly torqued. That the lamp is a little crooked can be seen from a certain angle. Dimensions: height 22.0 in. (56 cm), diameter 7.1 inches (18 cm). Literature: - Ch. Fiell and P.
