Mid-Century Modern Brass Pendant with White & Black Enamel, Fontana Arte Manner

About the Item

This sophisticated pendant was realized, in the manner of Fontana Arte, in Italy, circa 1960. It represents an exceptionally fine example of Mid-Century Modern Italian design with its luxurious materials and bold geometric lines. It features two rectangular glass panels whose form gently flares outwards as it approaches their apex. They are also positioned on a bias, however, so that the planes angle inwards towards their base. In the center of each is a smaller, matching rectangular form in frosted glass. The panels are secured by two bullet shaped brass supports on each side protruding from the planar sides of each. A radiant brass rod extends downwards from a circular white enamel canopy ending three inches below the bases of the glass panels. The rod culminates in a rounded end, reiterating the shape of the side supports. There is a black cylindrical accent enshrouding the center of the brass rod. This form both offers a striking tonal contrast to the white enamel and repeats the cylindrical form of the sockets (also in white enamel). The glass exhibits a subtle aqua tint, recalling the designs of Max Ingrand- the legendary lead designer for Fontana Arte who pioneered the use of colored glass. This sconce is as aesthetically compelling as it is versatile, blending perfectly with virtually any style of decor from classic Mid-Century Modern to ultra contemporary. The fixture accommodates two Edison based bulbs and has been newly rewired to American standards. The height can be adjusted to suit. Excellent condition. Italy, circa 1960 Dimensions 42" H X 11" W X 6" D.

Number four Suspension lamps, produced with the ancient cage-blown glass technique: the master glassmaker blows the glass bubble into his mouth inside a metal cage, which only partially contains its natural expansion. In this way the final artifact is partly retained by the cage and partly escapes it, creating a play of tension that generates an object suspended in the act of coming out of its constraint; the cage is further embellished with a galvanic treatment that enhances its appearance, making it shiny and bright. Glossy white glass enclosed inside with transparent glass. Produced by the masters of Fontana Arte. The height of the pendant without chain...
