Model "T766" Pendant Lamps by Hans-Agne Jakobsson for AB Markaryd, Sweden 1970s

About the Item

The T766 pendant lamp is a stunning example of Swedish modern design. Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a prominent designer and lighting manufacturer who played a crucial role in shaping the aesthetic of Swedish design during the mid- and even later part of the 20th century. The design of these lamps features several unique solutions, however, the perforated sheet metal bodies stand in focus. The cylindrical shape allows the light to be distributed evenly through the small, perforated holes, while the brass shade creates an appealing visual effect. The shade is lacquered white from the inside, therefore the “dotted” shadow cast by the light becomes visible on it. The result is a warm, inviting glow with a playful twist. These lamps offer plenty even when switched off; the metal sheet together with the bright brass create a contrast that is fundamentally modern in its appearance. The white ropes by which the lamps are suspended further add to the modernist aesthetic and emphasize the bodies. The brass shades can be removed freely, therefore Jakobsson is offering two lamps in one. These “T766” pendant lamps are perfect examples of the principles of Swedish modern design, which emphasized simplicity, functionality, and elegance. Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of the most important designers of the Swedish modern movement. He was known for his innovative use of materials and forms. His designs stand out for their quality just as much as their visual attributes; like most of his designs, these lamps were made at his own manufactory in Markaryd, Sweden. These pendant lamps are testaments to the enduring appeal of Swedish modern design and to Hans-Agne Jakobsson's lasting legacy as one of the movement's most significant designers.‎ Condition: In good vintage condition consistent with age and use. The brass shades have some weather marks and beautiful patina. Dimensions: 6.69 in Ø x 72.83 in H 17 cm Ø x 185 cm H About the Designer: Born in 1919 in Gotland, Sweden, Hans Agne Jakobsson is one of the most well-known Swedish lighting designers. He did his carpenter apprenticeship before studying architecture in Gothenburg. First working as an industrial designer for General Motors, he later founded his own company after being an assistant to the designers Carl Malmsten and Werner West. In 1950, due to Christmas, he added a model of hanging lamps in small strips of pine in one of his stores to soften the lively lighting of the shop window. The people who were passing by were immediately seduced by this hanging lamp, which started it all. He established his own company in 1951: Hans Agne Jakobsson AB and began producing this model in his factories and achieved success abroad as well. In 50 years, he designed more than 2000 lamps with unique designs. He used materials and experimented with multiple techniques, for example using fabrics with fringes, blown glass of colour and smoked glass. His great diversity resulted in a wide range of timeless lighting models. These pieces continue to seduce design lovers, as they adapt themselves to any interior, without blending into the background. Today, Jakobsson’s works can be found in private homes as well as public institutions throughout Sweden. The designer passed away in 2009 in Sweden, leaving behind a great legacy. ~H.
