Monumental Neo-Classical 18 Arm Chandelier, circa 1825, Designed by Schinkel
About the Item
Magnificent Empire period gilt metal and crystal 18 arm chandelier designed by Germany’s premier architect at the time Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who was responsible for erecting most of the palaces in Berlin and most notably the “Altes Museum”. Overall this model is in the shape of a three tier fountain. Twelve candle arms are attached to the lower frame, while another six rise on top of the same frame with crystal spears for additional light reflection. Remember this dates from ca 1825 and the more gold and crystal prisms were present the more the room lit up by sheer reflection of candle light. It has been recently restored to the original gold surface and rewired to URL standards.
Schinkel’s chandeliers not only grace the Knoblauchhaus in Berlin, today’s Stadtmuseum, but also the White House in Washington DC.
