About the Item

An adjustable head on a rotating curved arm and an adjustable reflective metal umbrella. Comes with One R7S 300 watt line feed halogen double ended 78 mm light bulb. Rotating on/off floor dimmer. Measures: 59"-70.75" H, 30" W. William Lipton Ltd., a dealer formally on East 61st Street in New York has offered this collection of bronze lamps for over 25 years. Made in an artisan workshop in Paris, each lamp is produced by hand. Both functional and highly decorative, bronzes d’ameublement such as wall-lights, floor lamps and table lights played a very important role in the French interior from the late seventeenth right through today. Closely following the latest stylistic changes, well-known artists and sculptors were responsible for their design. A rigid guild system maintained high standards of craftsmanship and regulated the process of bronze manufactory. The designs are based on traditional forms derived from candlesticks, plus some fanciful creations that reflect a Jules Verne view of illumination. The creation of bronze mounts or objects involved many different steps and was principally the work of bronze makers, seleurs-doreurs, or chasers and gilders. When the guild system was reformed in 1776, both casters and gilders became members of one and the same guild to continue the tradition of production. Some parts such as stems and arms are extruded. Other parts such as the bases and the bobeches, candle cups, must be cast. A wax mold taken from the model is used for casting by pressing it in a box with sand and pouring molten bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, in the resulting depression. All the parts hand-finished, patinated or gilt, then braised and assembled with care and finesse. This actual finishing process is done by the chiseller, who tools the bronzes with his instruments, creating burnished areas and a variety of finely or coarsely pounced or grained surfaces. This finishing process is of extreme importance because it lends the object great vitality through the varying light reflections that the differently treated areas create. When we brought these lamps to America, we had to make many revisions. The gauge of the tubes had to be increased to Stand up to the rigorous demands of an American home. The wiring is UL-rated and is made here and shipped to France. The lamps have been further modified to incorporate the transformers into the bases and adapted for Lutron dimmers. While the techniques used to make the lamps is traditional, the results are contemporary and highly practical.
