Bruno Munari for Danese, ‘Bali’ floor lamp, model ‘2003C’, travertine, plastic (PVC), lacquered steel, Italy, 1958 This floor lamp (1958) is designed by Bruno Munari for Danese and is part of the ‘Bali’ series. Munari made significant contributions to the industrial design brand Danese, with whom he had been collaborating since the 1940s. He created a wide range of furniture pieces for the company like this floor lamp. His lighting objects are characterized by elementary geometric shapes. The shade of this lighting object is based on a cubic shape finished with chamfered corners, reinforced by metal profiles that strengthen the shape. Executed in off-white PVC liner, the lamp radiates a sophisticated and diffused light that will give one's interior a pleasant ambience. Two steel stems emerge from the travertine base and run through the shade in a linear movement. Munari's belief that “Progress means simplifying, not complicating” is exemplified in the essential form, materials, and innovative assembly of the ‘Bali’ floor lamp. Bruno Munari (1907-1998), who was born in Milan, Italy, was a highly creative individual who pursued a variety of artistic endeavors. He was an artist, visual and product designer, and author of many books. He was also known for conducting educational workshops and interventions for young people and children. He spent a significant portion of his childhood and teenage years in Badia Polesine, located in the Veneto region of Italy. This rural environment had a profound influence on Munari's aesthetic development and work. In 1925, at the age of eighteen, Munari returned to Milan and quickly joined the Second Futurism group, which was led by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Starting in 1929, Munari worked as a graphic advertising designer. In 1930, he co-founded the R+M graphic studio with Riccardo Castagnedi. In 1939, the Mondadori publishing company hired him as the art director for Grazia and Il Tempo magazines. In 1950, he was appointed as the graphic consultant for the newly launched Epoca magazine. From 1943 to 1944, he served as the art director of Domus magazine. During this time, Munari developed his body of work consisting of advertising collages for magazines, sculptures, and abstract-geometric works of art. In addition, he deepened his love for writing and publishing. After World War Two, Munari distanced himself from the Futurist Movement because of its Fascist undertones. In 1948, he and Gillo Dorfles, Gianni Monnet, and Atanasio Soldati founded the Movimento Arte Concreta (MAC), the Italian movement for concrete art. Although he is considered one of the main figures in kinetic art, Munari's practices in multiple disciplines and intense creativity defy easy categorization. Bruno Munari passed away in Milan on September 29, 1998.
