David Horan Paper floor light in polished finish for Béton Brut, UK, 2022

About the Item

David Horan (born in Dublin, 1982) is a multidisciplinary designer and manufacturer based in London. With a Master of Arts in Design Products from the Royal College of Art 2013, he cut his cloth with London-designers Faye Toogood and Michael Anastassiades, before opening his own studio in 2021. This handmade floor light is part of the inaugural furniture and lighting collection by Horan entitled Paper. The collection was designed exclusively with Béton Brut and sees Horan as a modern decoupeur, applying his material to an original series of works. Informed by French craft traditions of decoupage and the Japanese Mingei movement, Horan innovates with layering handmade heritage paper to create a new applied ‘vegan vellum’. The collection is grounded in forms as precise as they are architectonic. Evoking Deco and Classical, the geometries contain harmony in ratio. This oversized floor light has a base that experiments with de-composition as re-composition, combining layers of handmade heritage paper to produce a soft natural appearance. Subtle creases across the surface produce a beautiful stone-like quality. A top layer of matte lacquer is applied by hand to protect the paper and provide it with a slight sheen. The shade uses a handmade heritage paper that has been rained on during the making process allowing light through it in an incredibly pleasing way. Available on a made to order basis in polished or matte lacquer finishes. Each piece is signed and numbered on the underside.

Three abandoned buildings with a strong geometrical character were the inspiration behind a new collection of sculptural objects. After being abandoned and stripped of ornaments, the pure architectural structure of these buildings becomes even more visible. Each object has its own purified design following the geometrical structure of a building. Over time abandoned buildings seem to adapt to the surroundings, just like these objects adjust and interact with the surrounding context through the use of reflecting materials. Mirror-look material and polished steel suggest infinity, whereas the existence of an abandoned building seems finite. Please note: Pictured Lamp...
