Model "741157-1" Floor Lamp by ASEA Belysning, Sweden Early 20th century

About the Item

ASEA produced models are pieces of Swedish lighting history. ASEA (before 1977 Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget), was a Swedish electrotechnical company headquartered in Västerås. It was founded in 1883 and was until 1987 the city's largest industrial company. The historic company has had a decisive impact on how the Swedish electrotechnical industry has developed, but also on design history. Some model like the “Viktoria” are preserved in museums, and their technical prowess can be also observed in their pieces such as this “741157-1” floor lamp. This innovative and timeless floor lamp model seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, reflecting the era's ethos. Crafted with precision and aesthetic finesse, this floor lamp is a testimonial to Swedish ingenuity. The lamp's foundation lies in a robust cast iron base, ensuring stability and durability. Its black lacquered sheet metal body, adorned with yellow metal and brass details in the articulated upper part, exudes sophistication. The amalgamation of materials creates a harmonious contrast, epitomizing the 20th century design principles that sought to marry functionality with form and also, elegance. The most peculiar element of the design is the so-called gooseneck that holds the fabric shade. A gooseneck is a semi-rigid, flexible joining element made from a coiled metal hose. Similar to its natural counterpart, it can be bent in almost any direction and remain in that position, in this case, this innovative element allows the light to be focused in any direction. The flexibility of the neck adds a touch of practicality to the lamp's overall aesthetic, making it a versatile piece. Next to the undeniable focus on functionality, aesthetic dimension was evidently considered, most evident in the fabric shade and the brass elements. The juxtaposition of the empire shaped fabric rouched shade against the modern body is a stroke of design genius. The shade, with its traditional and historic appeal, evokes a sense of nostalgia, harking back to a previous era. In contrast, the sleek and contemporary body propels the lamp into the modern age, creating a harmonious blend of past and present. This duality in design speaks to the evolution of Swedish lighting aesthetics during the mid-century period, where designers were not afraid to experiment with new materials while paying homage to traditional craftsmanship. ASEA Belysning, the producer of this unique floor lamp, has a rich heritage rooted in lighting innovation. Known for pushing boundaries and redefining norms, ASEA Belysning played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of Swedish lighting design during the 20th century. Their commitment to quality craftsmanship and avant-garde design principles set them apart as pioneers in the industry. This floor lamp stands as a prime example of the brilliance of Swedish lighting design during the 20th century. With its cast iron base, black lacquered body, and innovative adjustable neck, the lamp seamlessly bridges the gap between tradition and modernity. The design encapsulates the spirit of an era that embraced both heritage and progress in the pursuit of timeless design. Condition: In good vintage condition, consistent with age and use. • Swedish Brass Floor Lamp by Öia Belysning, Sweden, circa 1960s
    By Belysning
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Swedish Modern, with its simplified lines and lack of excessive ornamentation, was a counter reaction to the earlier, more decorative design movements such as Art Deco. In comparison, as this floor lamp demonstrates, the midcentury era brought streamlined modernism to Sweden as well. This model was created by the Swedish firm, ÖIA during the golden age of Scandinavian lighting design. The design is characterized by its simplified forms, and stylishly contrasting materials. The body is composed of a beautiful, patinated brass structure with the lower part of the tube wrapped in leather. The round, brass column frames the leather thus highlighting the beautiful handiwork. The contrasting materials are the main appeal of this model and bring the aesthetic into modernism. The shade has a Classic shape that is ideal to direct the light, with a beautiful brass colour and a decorative ring. The head is adjustable thanks to the OMI made joints at the neck, making this lamp perfect spotlight lighting. The OMI company (Otto Meinzer GmbH & Co Metallwarenfabrik from Iserlohn in Germany) was a manufacturer of chromed brass joints for the European and the USA lighting...
