Splendid Floor Lamp by Martine Bedin for Memphis Collection
About the Item
Painted metal floor lamp.
An elegant floor lamp, Splendid astonishes with its colors and materials, glazed in blue and yellow gold.
Precious, sacred and eternal colors, rooted in a cultural tradition that Memphis constantly rejects and embraces.
Splendid, designed in 1981 by Martine Bedin, is a floor lamp composed of a semi spherical base that supports a slender steel post terminating in two light bulbs. The base is the part that strikes and intrigues the observer, due to the presence of thin lateral disks that poke out from the rim like little feet, giving the lamp an anthropomorphic aspect.
Bedin has suggested that the love of the bright, warm colors utilized in her creations comes from her personal history. In particular, the Mediterranean identity of the French designer is the characteristic that immediately brought her closer to the Memphis group, through the use of outlandish colors and unique juxtapositions.

Trends are cyclical, and even the ones that distinguish an era find a way of returning back in vogue. Memphis Groups design's are a perfect example of how a movement that had top praise during the 80s, could once again regain its admiration in present day 2020. Memphis Milano is the powerful cultural phenomenon of the 1980s that revolutionized creative and commercial logics in design. Born from the idea of Ettore Sottsass and a group of young designers and architects, in Milan, coupled in the years by famous designers from the international scene, Memphis turned upside down all of the existing parameters on living. Ettore Sottsass as the backbone of the group, design gained a new concept and expression through new shapes, materials and patterns, expanding the creative limits of the industry. Memphis became a symbol of New Design. Its influence is still clear in various sectors of production and beyond.
