Wim den Boon, black one-off floorlamp icw Gispen, midcentury modern design 1950s

About the Item

This unique floorlamp is designed in 1958 by architect/designer Wim Den Boon for private Dutch client from Wassenaar. The lamp is a one of a kind as it is especially designed for this particular client. Together with the client’s wife, a ceramist, he designed this lamp and had it been made at the famous Gispen factory. The lamp was designed as part of a completely living room interior. The floorlamp bears strong traits of the aesthetic language of Italian mid-century design lamps. Wim Den Boon (1912-1968) was a Dutch designer, interior designer and architect. Den Boon was inspired by the modernist architecture of Le Corbusier, De Stijl and Rietveld. Den Boon studied at the Academy for Visual Arts in The Hague in 1941. In 1945 he founded 'Groep & together with Hein Stolle and Pierre Kleykamp, a group that manifested itself after the war with interiors and furniture design such as the furniture of the international departure hall of Schiphol in 1948. Group & also designed a dining room chair for the magazine 'Goed Wonen', for which Den Boon was the editorial secretary from 1948-1950. This was the most prominent magazine for interior design in the 1940s and 1950s. As a purist he focuses on the power of the space itself and often uses a few large objects with which he fills the space.. Den Boon's dogmatic character and the austere tone of his articles resulted in too much controversy which led to Wim Den Boon being forced to resign from the magazine in 1950. In the late 1950s he worked with architect Joop Rutjes on small number of chairs and pieces of furniture. Provenance: Bought directly from the family who commissioned the interior. Please note: This is a unique vintage item and has trace of use/storage and may have cracks/loss of paint. Artworks are hard to photograph, we tried to get the colors to match the actual artwork. However, some differences may occur. Please take a close look to the photos.
