About the Item

This pair of wall lights was designed during the 1950s, an era in which Finland saw the birth of many of its most iconic lighting models. It was a period of consistency, excellence, and sophistication design wise. Itsu, short for Itä-Suomen Sähkö (eng. Eastern Finland Electricity), was a small, lesser known manufactory that produced characteristic models in small quantities. By the 1950s Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures’ are their atmospheric light and disciplined, functionalist design that is not short of subtle decorative elements. The form of these brass lights is made up of versatile geometric shapes; circles, cylinders, and a cone. The freer forms include the curved tubes that connect the separate elements. Accentuating these shapes is the polished brass that features a nice warm and even patina. The lightbulbs are situated in the conical bodies that are perforated with small holes that truly stand out when the light is on. The same perforation can be seen on the lacquered shades that have several functions; they serve as decorative elements, while also reflecting the light that is distributed upwards. The light brightens up the brass’s colour, and creates playful shadows. Overall, the composition of the shapes and clever decorative elements give these lights a personality that isn’t loud but still stands out, which is an essentially Finnish design virtue. As this pair of Itsu-made “EY-42” wall lights show, these types of fixtures can add a fantastic layer of lighting to any ambiance.
