Illusion Sanctuary is an ode to French architectural theorist Etienne-Louis Boullée's monument to Newton. A spiritual shrine that turns out was impossible to build. Shaw Liu finds inspiration in this unrealised architecture, particularly its spherical body, which was intended to mimic the effects of day and night. It is the balanced art of light, dark and the in between. This art deco light features a stout, mirrored body, an exploration of the tangible and intangible. Reflections are phantom-like and can be inconsistent. Almost hallucinogenic, Sanctuary's hollow dome symbolises the eternal spirit of Newton. As a table or floor light, it projects a golden halo upwards. Whilst the bulb itself is the source of light, it is not incandescent. This piece is an original design in Shaw’s series, she would later go on to create Sol Sanctuary which features a traditional, luminous opaline and alabaster light bulb. Reminiscent of light bollards, crafted in hand-polished stainless steel. It is made to be paired with a handcrafted glass bulb which helps project the light upwards. Striking and truly distinctive, it belongs in the company of equally remarkable objects, including the homes of the audacious, and as lighting for art studios. Shaw Liu crafted this monument as she believes everyone deserves to have a cenotaph within their midst. A handsome set of hand-made wall light 2 arm carved wood monkey sconce wall lamps. Hand painted finish with browns, reds and gilt trim. Decorative trim adorns the top above the figures and just below them. The lights stand on curved gilt metal rods with floral shaped flourishes. This was manufactured by Maitland-Smith. The monkeys in this set have a great amount of character and joy in their expression with a strong pose. Their hats and jackets appear to have colonial-esque jackets. There’s a strong s-curve pose for the figures as well. In Good condition. Some gentle wear on the small light shades. One of the shades has a small hole.
