Pair of 19th Century Italian Hand Carved Angel Cherub Sconces
About the Item
These excellently hand-carved wooden 19th Century Italian angel cherub sconces were done in the traditional Renaissance style. During the Renaissance period, cherub and angel figural carvings were quite popular. The Italian artist, Raphael created characters called “putti,” which looked like male babies or toddlers, with wings or without. The depiction of chubby, young children as cherubs came from the observation of the relationship between toddlers and their parents. The innocence of children, along with their capacity to provide an abundant amount of joy and love to their parents led to the interpretation which is still enduringly popular today, that of love and playfulness.
They are carved out of linden wood and have acquired a rich patina from age. The dark wood contrasts with the gilt gesso wings that shimmer when lit. In this pair, one cherub is facing left and holding the candle on the right while the other cherub is facing right and holding the candle on the left. The serene cherubs gaze at each other while inviting us to gaze at them and will certainly draw attention to the wall on which they are mounted.
Like picture frames, they have a metal hook on the back for hanging. Dimensions of each sconce: H= 19 in. W= 17 in. D= 7 in. Weight= 4 lbs., Total weight of 8 lbs.
