About the Item

The Spelling Manor's living-room wall-lights. A fine pair of French 20th century Louis XV style gilt-bronze figural three-light wall sconces, each modeled with a center cast of a parrot, the waisted urn nozzles with lobed undersides, above foliate cast drip pans issuing from entwining foliate branches, circa Paris, 20th century. Note: There are two pairs of these beautiful wall lights available. The price quoted is PER PAIR. All of them were removed from The Spelling Manor, the luxurious 57,000 square foot sprawling estate in the exclusive Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, the French Château style residence which sits on 4.7 acres was built in 1990 by the late legendary TV producer Aaron Spelling for his wife Candy. In 2011 The Spelling Manor was sold by Mrs. Spelling to Ms. Petra Ecclestone, the daughter of Formula One billionaire Bernie Ecclestone, for a reported $85 million dollars. It is one of the largest private residence in Los Angeles, even larger than the White House and, at the time, it was catalogued as the most expensive home in the United States. Designed in the Louis XV 'pittoresque' style popularised by Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier and Nicolas Pineau, these wall-lights relate to the oeuvre of the sculpteur, fondeur et ciseleur du roi Jacques Caffiéri (1678-1755). In the Inventory drawn up following his death in 1755, no.43 is described as un autre model double de bras de cheminée ancien à perroquets à deux branches, and this model was already listed in an earlier inventory of his stock in 1747. Two similar pairs of parrot wall-lights, one with two and one with three branches, were supplied to Madame Infante, Louise-Elizabeth of France, duchesse de Parma for the Palazzo di Colorno. Discussed in A. Gonzàlez-Palacios, Gli Arredi Francesi, Milan, 1995, no. 52, p.243, the Colorno wall-lights are stamped with the C couronné poinçon and were recorded in the R.le Guardaroba in the 1769 Inventory. All of the Colorno wall-lights were almost certainly amongst the thirty-four wagons of furnishings and fineries brought back to Colorno from the duchesse's second trip to Paris between September 1752 and September 1753.
