A Pair of MODERNIST WALL APPLIQUES by JACQUES BINY for LUMINALITE, France 1950

About the Item

An outstanding pair of asymmetrical wall appliques, Mid-century Modern, Bauhaus, Forme-Libre, in black lacquered metal, white lacquered metal strips, white lighting apparatus in plexiglas / perspex, screws and bolts in golden brass, by Jacques Biny (1913-1976), ed. Luminalite, France 1950. After graduating from Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1935, Jacques Biny first works as an interior designer and architect. Then, starting from the end 1940' he conceives lighting. The edition company he establishes, Luminalite, is created in 1953. His creations are both radical and modern, and use new materials such as Perspex, but also new techniques of working with metal, such as lacquer, perforations, curves. His designs are sober and pure, functional and performant.
