About the Item

Impressive pair of Napoleon III period gold bronze five-light candle sconces by Victor Paillard. Exquisitely cast 22-karet mercury gold bronze body with a deep, warm and glowing patina. Mercury gold bronze is rare and is recognized for its finest quality and extraordinary vibrant color. Fire-gilding is an ancient process of gold mercury amalgam exposed to high heat. Crisp detailed sculpted Rococo leafy c-scroll backplate with raised relief sunflowers, five intricately chased sprouting acanthus leaf arms depicting a pair of doves, terminating in foliage bobeche and flower bud capitals with raised relief sunflowers. If desired, we can convert to electric. Signed on the back of plate with initials VP and on the back of the bobeches VP 85. Victor Paillard (1805-1886), celebrated French sculptor and bronzer during the Napoleon III period. The son of a chiseler, student of Jean Francois Denière, he opened his own studio in 1830 eventually growing it mid century to a workshop of 100 employees. He was recognized by his peers as an important castor and worked side by side with many of them, such as Carrier-Belleuse. He was awarded medals for his work at the 1851 The Great Exhibition in London and in 1867 Paris Exhibition. In 1874 he became the mayor of the 3rd district in Paris. Rococo design dominated interiors and furniture during Louis XV’s reign in the 18th century with sensuous organic curves, asymmetry and elaborate ornamentation with an aura of fantasy, luxury and elegance, while being intimate and comfortable at the same time. Art and design was influenced greatly by the king's chief mistress Madame Pompadour, a patron of the arts was behind the funding of the porcelain company Sévres. This glamorous design has a sophisticated style and adds contrasting highlights to modern and contemporary interior settings.
