Pyramidal wall lamp with white opaline glass and gold-patinated metal. Square base with 4 lights. Italy, 1970s. Dimensions: 36 x 36 with a depth of 19.
Opaline glass (or milk glass) refers to a milky glass that can be white or colored. To create opaline glass, opacifying substances such as sodium phosphate, sodium chloride, calcium phosphate, calcium chloride, tin oxide, and talc oxide are added. The glass can thus take on different colors and present variable shades, depending on the quantity of the added substance: from white to gray, pink, lavender green, gold yellow, azure, blue, and black.
The first opaline glass objects were produced in Murano in the 16th century, with the addition of calcium phosphate.
