Rococo Style Florentine Wall Sconce in Gilded Iron and Crystals

About the Item

Huge and charming Italian wall sconce; it has six light points with fake candles; the main structure, sturdy and well-proportioned, is made of the solid iron rod and the design follows a precise Rococo style with a soft curvilinear evolution and with the application of decorations and finishes foliaceous performed by hand in sheet iron; the whole has been gilded with the old technique of gilding “missione” (untranslatable to English); “missione” gilding is a procedure that allows the application of gold leaf on metal surfaces: a glue with a very strong adhesive power is spread on the object to be gilded and then the gold leaf is applied; the adhesive liquid is called "missione", hence the name of the technique. Every craftsman had his own secret formula for composing the glue that was supposed to hold the gold on the object for an indefinite number of years! Indeed, think of the majestic 'Gardens of Versaille' (Paris), at the court of Louis XIV, whose richly worked iron gates are gilded with the mission gilding technique. The applique was then adorned with crystals of various shapes, ground and faceted, which were completely hand-fixed to each other and to the structure with metal wires; the points of light, wisely distributed, are six, obtained with fake candles fixed to the "bobeche" sheet metal in the shape of leaves; the light is spread evenly, comfortable and pleasant. It was completely handmade between the difficult years between 1935 and 1940 in Florence by an unknown craftsman, a misunderstood Master who, in his small workshop, managed to propose a unique, precious and elegant product; the "elegant" objects are those that are never associated with the word "magnificence" but with the simplicity of beauty and elegance. We must remember that Florence and Florentine craftsmanship come from afar, bringing with them values that already existed in the Middle Ages and that thanks to the "Corporations" and the enlightened Medici rulers made the city and its skilled craftsmen the center of the artistic world and of past and present history.
