SECOND HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY GOLDEN BRONZE EMPIRE APPLIQUES

About the Item

These two gilt bronze Empire style sconces date back to the period of Napoleon III, which corresponds to the Second French Empire between 1852 and 1870. This style takes inspiration from the art of ancient Rome and the era of Napoleon Bonaparte's Empire , characterized by classical notes and the desire for luxury and opulence. The design of the sconces itself reflects this period, combining symbolic and natural motifs with an elegant gold finish. The wall sconces were originally designed to accommodate two candles, but over the years they have been modified to include an electrical system, which is now included in the selling price. The two main lights are shaped like cornucopias that extend symmetrically outward. This detail recalls the symbolism of abundance and fertility present in the art of the Empire. The top of the sconces is adorned with a swan, an emblem often used in works of the Empire, representing grace and nobility. The decoration of the lower part of the appliques is phytomorphic, while the termination of the appliques is represented by a pine cone, a traditional symbol representing fertility, prosperity and rebirth. These appliques therefore represent a piece of history and culture and give a touch of refinement and charm to any environment in which they are placed. Measurements: HxWxD 31 x 19 x 12cm.
