"Zonnewende" Wall Lights designed by Jan-Willem Bosman, The Netherlands 1960s

About the Item

In the realm of mid-20th century Dutch design, these "Zonnewende" wall lights produced by RAAK Amsterdam and envisioned by the talented Jan-Willem Bosman in 1965, stand as evidence to the era's minimalist aesthetic. Hailing from the 1960s, these wall lights are an embodiment of simplicity and elegance, showcasing a design ethos that continues to captivate admirers today. Jan-Willem Bosman’s present models are the most well-known lights that he designed for RAAK. The name “RAAK” can be loosely translated as “bulls eye” in Dutch, i.e. the company hits the target with respect to its design and function. The designs produced by the company were aimed at being modest, elegant, and effective. These ideals are fully translated into the design of this pair; with their unadorned cylindrical bodies and a subtle play of light and shadow. The model’s name translates to ‘solstice’ which is a clever nod to the design’s utilization of light and dark elements. The design is characterized by clean lines, geometric shapes, and a commitment to functionalism. Their minimalist form, where form follows function with remarkable precision is achieved by the use of glass and metal. The round metal backplates are great backdrops for the cylindrical lights held to them by a single rod. Additionally, the large shades are also balanced visually by the backplate. What makes the "Zonnewende" Wall Lights so remarkable is their ability to seamlessly blend into diverse interior settings. The design has great proportions, to create an attention-grabbing look. When lit, these lamps create an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the glass a vivid colour as well. Raak Amsterdam, the illustrious producer of these lights was renowned for its commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. Established in 1954, Raak quickly gained recognition for collaborating with exceptional designers like Jan-Willem Bosman. Their partnership produced timeless lighting solutions that continue to inspire contemporary designers and enthusiasts alike. This pair is a modernist design to its core with a look that is ageless and can stand out but also complement any space. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. • "Saga" Wall Sconces by Kay Kørbing for Lyfa, Denmark 1960s
    By Kay Korbing, Lyfa
    Located in Utrecht, NL
These Lyfa-edition “Saga” wall sconces by Danish architect and designer, Kay Kørbing are true collectors’ pieces. By the 1950s, Lyfa had built an international reputation for original, high-quality, modernist lamps. In the postwar era, the company collaborated with esteemed architects and designers to produce minimalist, sculptural pieces including these lamps. Made of brass, metal, and crystal, the design of this model is entirely in the vein of modernism, while also sticking to the main ideals of Danish design, such as functionality. This can be observed in the lamps’ build that allows them to be faced either up- or downwards. The proportions are carefully thought out, with three main sections comprising the design. The three elements - the brass base, black metal shade holder, and the crystal glass shade - are clearly separated both by their shape, material, and colour. Most eye-catching are the Orrefors crystal glass shades in a peculiar shape that appear to be roll cut. Orrefors has been established in Swedish design tradition since 1898. Glass from the forests of Småland was incomparable: “Il n’y as que ça!” (There is nothing like it!) exclaimed the 1925 Paris World Fair. As these sconces showcase, the glass and shape are always in focus, combined with elegance, simplicity, and confidence. The predominantly round shapes are balanced by the square backplate. The artistic design is very honest in a purely Scandinavian manner, exposing the joinery and the materials’ natural qualities as well. This pair of “Saga” wall sconces is a stunning example of how the 1960s are still able to deliver modern "art" to any interior. The producer, Lyfa, produced some cabin lamps...
