20th Century Man Ray for Gavina Pair of Table Lamps mod. Rue Férou

About the Item

Man Ray was an American visual artist who spent most of his career in Paris. Man Ray's career is distinctive above all for the success he achieved in both the United States and Europe. His art spanned painting, sculpture, film, prints and poetry, and in his long career he worked in styles influenced by Cubism, Futurism, Dada and Surrealism. He also successfully navigated the worlds of commercial and fine art, and came to be a sought-after fashion photographer. He is perhaps most remembered for his photographs of the inter-war years, in particular the camera-less pictures he called 'Rayographs', but he always regarded himself first and foremost as a painter. Here a pair of table lamp mod. Rue Férou with metal structure and cardboard canvas light diffuser. Designed by Man Ray and manufactured in Italy by Gavina, this table lamp is a very unique piece and example of simplicity but at the same time ingenuity. The light system can be rewired to US standards upon request.

  • 20th Century Man Ray Mirror "Les grands transparents" for Gavina, '70s
By Man Ray, Simon Gavina Editions
    Located in Turin, Turin
Among the most versatile and creative artists of the twentieth century, Man Ray (1890 - 1976) - was one of the most radical and multifaceted representatives of Dadaism and Surrealism. Born in Philadelphia in 1890, he frequented Greenwich Village at the time of the avant-garde, following the 1913 New York Armory Show; Paris in the 1920s and 1930s, where he played a key role in the Dada and Surrealist Movements; the Hollywood of the 1940s, where he joined other European war refugees; and finally Paris again until his death in 1976. Man Ray met Dino Gavina in Paris. At first the meeting was tense because Man Ray thought he was facing a journalist or a critic. Then his aggressiveness turned to politeness as soon as he realized that he was asking for nothing more than to meet him. From the hallway they moved on to the studio, and they spent hours together. At that very moment an extraordinary friendship was born and an association that united them for life. Here the mirror "Les grands transparents...
