About the Item

A one-of-a-kind, illuminated sculpture entitled, "The University Observatory". Designed and entirely handcrafted by artist, Art Donovan. This Steampunk / Industrial - styled table lamp is inspired by vintage observatory telescopes. The lamp features custom made bulb shields of solid brass for both the task light on the left and the ambient LED bulb on the right. These complex brass and mesh details are signature elements of Donovan's style, for which he has become recognized internationally. The lamps, which comprise the crown are fully adjustable to any practical angle. The interior of the lamp base features a glowing, hand painted moon in addition to many unusual, translucent details -all glowing from the interior of the solid maple base. This lamp design is intended to effect a large volume - as in an architectural model. The colors are brass, black and slate gray with glowing Lucite components. The Glowing Red Eye in the center is an homage to the "HAL9000" from "2001: A Space Odyssey". At the base, there are two, miniature toggle switches that separately operate the crown lights and the interior lamps. The complex counter weights and details on the crown are inspired by the observatory telescope at The University of South Carolina. Vintage observatory telescopes are often re-fitted with new technologies as they are created. These "after-market" scientific additions give these venerable telescopes a visually thrilling appearance. The "University Observatory "echos that complex collaboration of vintage and contemporary technologies. Fully functional as a multi-light lamp with the presence of a completely proprietary sculpture.
