Crafted by hand: ceramic table lamp by Norwegian artist Jossolini

About the Item

A statement piece designed and handcrafted by ceramic artist Johanne Birkeland who works under the artist name Jossolini. The lamp base is hand built in white stoneware clay, and hand decorated with black matte glaze. The Norwegian artist works from her studio in Oslo. She uses ancient handcrafting techniques to craft pieces with contemporary aesthetic. The lamp base is built using coils of clay rolled out by hand. Coiling is a very strong construction method, which allows Jossolini to build big pieces with daring forms while retaining a hollow core. The lamps are fired in an electric kiln at 1240C / 2264F. Jossolini's forms are not only about strength, but also about balance. This two-legged lamp base is typical for Jossolini's designs: inspired by body language, the form goes in and out of balance with human- or animal-like movements. "I try to bring something playful into functional objects. It is both a sculptural art piece and a functional object. I consider the sculptural and functional aspects equally during the sculpting process. The decoration I think of as a skin, that adds to animating the form, capturing its motion.”
