About the Item

Mid-Century Modern table lamp by Gordon & Jane Martz, circa 1960s. This vintage ceramic lamp features an earthy sage color and has a teak finial and measures at the widest point (in the middle of the base) 7.25" in diameter x base is 22" height / with harp 33" total height. The lampshade is new and measures 18" diameter. Martz lamp is signed and in beautiful condition. "Gordon & Jane Martz were among the premier American designers and makers of ceramic lamps and other goods. Their style was in keeping with the simplicity of design desired in the years following World War II. While the Martzes’ bold, uncomplicated forms spoke to Modernists of the period, their production techniques placed them firmly in the world of handcraft, which prized the labor of artisans over machines. Lamps were their main focus, but furniture, dinnerware, and other small items were produced in their Indiana facility and were shipped all over the country. Today, the popularity of their work is growing as a new audience has come to appreciate their distinctive style. Gordon Martz and Jane Marshall (1929-2007) met while they were students at the New York State College of Ceramics in Alfred NY. In 1951, they joined the Marshall Studios in Veedersburg, Indiana, founded by Jane's grandmother Jesse in 1922, and operated by the family including Jane's father Nicholas Marshall and her mother Grace, originally to produce lampshades and woodwork. For the next 38 years, the Martzes at Marshall Studios designed and produced a wide variety of ceramic housewares including stoneware lamps, dishes, and tiles. The bodies of their ware were formed by slip-casting, ram pressing, or jiggering, and the pieces were hand decorated. Their work was recognized by a design award from the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, which also has some of their work in its permanent collection".
