About the Item

Important living room lamp in chiseled and gilded bronze and onyx marble from Algeria in Louis XVI style. Rich decoration of garlands of flowers, fruits and draperies, missing the shade. The base is tripod-shaped, the center is decorated with a fire pot using the decorations of the belly in the Antique. The work, the decorations and the carving of the bronzier, is quite exceptional, this living room lamp of an extremely fine composition is inspired by the iconographic models of Pierre Gouthière and fits well in the register of Parisian productions, intended to take place in the most sumptuous interiors. Foundry's mark with monogram on the reverse of a bronze for Léon Marchand, manufacturer of art bronzes. Literature: The bronzes of the 19th century, Pierre Kjellberg, the amateur editions, Paris 1989 page 662 Provenance: private collection About the artist: Marchand Louis Léon (1831-1899), Parisian founder Founded in 1822, this bronze art factory is located around 1850 at 57 rue de Richelieu. It has an important exhibition gallery which, according to an issue of L'Illustration from 1860, appears to be well stocked with furnishing bronzes, torches, vases, fireplace fittings, statuettes and groups. Marchand edited, among others, the group Cleopatra and Lesbie of Cumberworth. From 1860, Léon Marchand collaborated with Frédéric-Eugène Piat (1827-1903), one of the main sculptor-ornamentalists associated with the artistic renewal of the French art and furnishing bronze industry of the second half of the century. In 1876, Léon Marchand participated in the World's Fair in Philadelphia, where he exhibited a bronze and marble fireplace.
