Lava Lamp, White Plastic with Blue and Red Lava, Pierre Castignola
About the Item
Amsterdam based designer Pierre Castignola (France - 1995) graduated Cum Laude from the Design Academy in 2018. He aims to have a conceptual background in his work while focusing on a surprising, intriguing and surrealist outcome. His conceptual focus belongs in the perception of the world, with a strong fascination for semiotics and symbols to lead to a radical and critical design. He sets out to redefine the paradigm of creation and consumption.
Copytopia is often viewed as the artist’s main body of work.
Fascinated by the complexity and symbols surrounding the infamous chair commonly known as monobloc, Castignola employs discarded plastic garden chairs as raw material, which he then cuts and reassembles to constitute a variety of everyday objects. With the use of existing pieces of furniture as part of new ones the artist sets out to question the legitimacy of intellectual property, while simultaneously prompting us to reevaluate our relationship with the objects around us, bringing value back to the ones some might consider disposable.
Extension from his main project using plastic garden chair, this new body of object uses plastic garden table. A logical step for the artist that allow him to engage a new visual language and possibilities.
Born from a fascination towards the material icon of 1960s counterculture, Lava Lamp is reconstructed from its antithesis, the timeless plastic garden table. In Lava Lamp, the archetype of the peace-and-love era is recreated with a precise assemblage of discarded lawn table parts, signature of the designer, as a personal homage to this increasingly uncommon, timestamped symbol.

Pierre Castignola
Amsterdam-based designer Pierre Castignola (France, 1995) graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2018. Fascinated by semiotics and symbols, Castignola sets out to redefine the paradigm of creation and consumption. The vast array of contemporary objects, sculptures and furniture pieces that constitute his body of work reflect his radical and critical position while featuring surprising, surrealist outcomes. His practice specialises in producing unique custom pieces and installations for organisations and private clients. Copytopia, often viewed as the artist’s most emblematic project, explores the symbolic complexities of the iconic yet infamous monobloc plastic chair. In this series, Castignola uses discarded monoblocs as raw material, cutting and reassembling them to create a variety of everyday objects. By reusing existing pieces of furniture to constitute new ones, the artist aims to question the legitimacy of intellectual property while simultaneously prompting us to reevaluate our relationship with the objects around us. His work has been published in Elle decoration, Designboom, Hypebeast, Designwanted, Architectural Digest and Intramuros magazine, and exhibited in several countries, in cities such as Beijing, London, Paris and New York. In 2020, his piece Times Four Armchair was included in the French national collection (CNAP). Castignola’s first solo show, Monobloc Dinner party, took place at Atelier Ecru Gallery (Gent, Belgium) in 2022.
