Luciferase L
About the Item
This unique light sculpture is part of Nacho Carbonell’s 'Luciferase' series exclusively produced for Galerie BSL since 2011. Historically, 'Luciferase' is Carbonell’s first work incorporating light. “The root of this word luciferase is ‘carrier of light'," explains Nacho, "and reflects the system used by flora and fauna living the abyss, in the total obscurity found at greatest depths of the ocean. Even more than lights, I consider these pieces like creatures that glow with light”.
Carbonell is known for his tactile approach to sculpture which plays with textures and experimental techniques. “I like to see objects as living organisms, imagine them coming alive and being able to surprise you with their behaviour. I want to create objects with my hands; then I can give them my personality. I turn them into communicative objects that can arouse one’s feelings and imagination. In short, what I want to create are objects with a fictional or fantasy element that allow you to escape everyday life”.
Named "Designer of the Future" at Design Miami/Basel in 2009 at age 28, Nacho Carbonell was born in Spain in 1980 and graduated with high honours from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2007. His work is included in the permanent collections of numerous museums worldwide including the Groningen Museum, Netherlands; the 2121 Museum, Japan; Fnac-Fonds national d’art contemporain, France; le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, Canada; and in the United States, the MoMA San Francisco, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Mint Museum.
