About the Item

Pair of rare and exquisite sculptural form bedside table lamps designed circa 1958 by German artist and graphic designer Ernest Igl (1920 -2001) for Hillebrand, Germany, , This design is published in the 1959 Hillebrand lighting catalog although the original design date could have been a few years prior to that. Igl designed a small seires of lamps for Hillebrand in the late 1950s which were all based upon a few common design principles, a perforated sculptural form shade and a brass base , in our opinion ,of this series of lamps , this design is the most beautiful and avant garde in concept and is also the hardest to find today ,probably due to the avant garde nature of the sculptural form shade also acting as a supporting element for the lamp, maybe too extreme an idea for the public at the time. As mentioned the elegant perforated sculptural form enameled steel shade also acts as part of the support in combination with the folded conical form brass stem. The perforated shade creates a beautiful warm ethereal light quality and give these diminutive lamps a jewel like quality. The modest dimensions malke these ideal for bedside lighting. These lamps have been sympathetically restored and rewired, both lamps however still retain their original old ceramic bulb holders and clips which were serviceable, we wanted to retain those as proof of originality and age. The brass stems exhibit user wear commensurate with age and use, we have not polished them in order to retain the original brass patina and visual authenticity. Each lamp uses a single small E14 light bulb. A rare opportunity to find a pair ready to plug in. Ernest Igl attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and the Academy of Applied Arts in Munich and then persued a career as a graphic designer, painter and sculptor before producing several industrial style icons such as the iconic sculptural form space age 'IGL' directors desk designed in 1970 for Wilhem Werndl which highlights his talents as a sculptor.

Wear consistent with age and use. Lovely restored condition ,just rewired and ready to plug in. The brass stems show some light user wear and small restoration, yellowing to the hidden inside surface of the lamp shade commensurate with age and the heat emitted by the light bulb..
