Pair Of French 19th Century Louis XVI St. Ormolu And Onyx Lamps
About the Item
A beautiful and finely decorated pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Ormolu and Onyx lamps, signed Henri Picard. This wonderful pair is raised by a square pedestal with recessed corners and reeded panels. The socle above has a beaded and spiraling circular band around its base with mottled edges and draping acanthus leaves. Each stunning lamp has an additional array of acanthus leaves surrounding the base of the Onyx body. The mid section contains bowed Ormolu ribbons with swaging floral garlands leading to the two square Ormolu handles on either side. The Ormolu socle above the Onyx body is decorated with scrolls coming from each handle, Coeur-de-Rai bottom edges, a fluted neck, and a dentil pattern edge atop.
Henri Picard (1831-1890) was a renowned 19th century French Bronzier, and founded The Maison Picard Paris, in 1831. The firm was active until circa 1890. Picard’s works are known for high quality chasing and magnificent mercury gilding. Picard was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III for decorative items for his apartments in the Royal and Imperial Château Fontainebleau, which are now on exhibit in the Louvre. As well, an important pair of twelve-light candelabras, that remain in the Musée du Louvre today. Henri Picard is highly regarded by antique experts and collectors alike.
