Pair of French 19th Century Renaissance St. Bronze, Ormolu and Marble Lamps
About the Item
A striking and most impressive pair of French 19th century Renaissance st. patinated bronze, ormolu and Rouge Griotte marble lamps signed F. Barbedienne. Each lamp is raised by a square Rouge Griotte marble base with beautiful scrolled foliate ormolu feet with handsome lion paws and a fine mottled border with a fine wrap around tied berried laurel band below the elegantly curved fluted support. The patinated bronze urn shaped body above is raised by a socle shaped pedestal support with a wrap around laurel and reeded bands. The body displays richly chased scenes of a beautiful maiden draped in a wonderfully executed flowing garment with lovebirds in her hands amidst additional maidens and personages with smoldering fires and vine vessels. At each side are striking interlocking scrolled horn like handles from superb masks of mythological creatures.
Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810 – 1892), a renowned French Bronzier. Between 1850 and 1854 his firm, Barbedienne, provided furnishings in the Renaissance Revival style for the Hôtel de Ville, Paris. They received numerous medals at the International Exhibitions, including medals in three different classes at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London.
