Pair of Patinated Bronze Lamps

About the Item

Charming pair of lamps, the feet are in bronze with a medal patina and represent two magnificent Putti with finely chiselled hair. Of a very high quality of casting, they are leaning on a vine, holding a vine shoot or abundant leaves and bunches of grapes forming an arm of light. Period: 19th century Dimensions of the foot: Height: 21,5cm x Width: 7cm Shade dimensions: Height: 14,5cm - Width top: 8,8cm - Width bottom: 20cm Cast iron: Ferdinand Barbadienne These magnificent Bronze Putti are enhanced by sumptuous pleated silk shades in burgundy and gold interiors, made in a traditional manner, in a resolutely couture spirit and embellished with sober finishes. This pair of lamps has been electrified with an electrically twisted sheath of plain gold silk effect fabric sublimating the interior of the shades. The Putti are the very expression of an artistic work oriented towards the world of early childhood. The wordPutto (Putti in the plural) also refers to the idea of (maternal) love, or even of a "mischievous little genie". Donatello is credited with this artistic genre, but this 14th century Italian sculptor objectively based his work on the cupids of ancient Greece or on representations of children found, in particular, on Egyptian sarcophagi. This craze is not new, but it has experienced a revival since the 15th century. The trend does not seem to be waning, if we are to judge by the widespread fashion for angels in Europe today. Loaded with symbolism, they can also be seen on tombs when the deceased has died very young. Rather full of good intentions, this "protective" object has crossed the centuries by decorating buildings, castles and frescos. The Puttiont has many qualities and on the huge canvases of the Venetian painters, as well as on the bronze or marble sculptures, they look at us amused.
