Pair of Scandinavian Mid-Century Ceramic Table Lamps by Heerwegen Denmark 1971

About the Item

Pair of Scandinavian ceramic table lamps by Karin and Erik Heerwagen from Heerwagen Studio Langeland Island Denmark, signed by hand Heerwagen 1971. Modern Danish avant garde ceramics made of heavy stoneware with abstract glaze. Rectangular base with dome shaped top. The base is glazed in a rich cream tone with abstract linear decoration in dark brown. The ends of the sculptural lines run out in drops. The round element is open-pore and unglazed, creating a very exciting look with the glazed base. The setting sits on a brass spacer. A silk shade with a rough look in friendly beige (35 x 33 x 35cm) fits perfectly with the organic, rustic statement of the lamp feet. The shade is laminated white inside so that even light shines through when the lamps are turned on. The position of the shade can be adjusted by means of the ring on the socket up and down, depending on where the lamps will stand. So the brass spacer can be visible or not. Egon and Karin Heerwagen met when Egon worked as a trained potter at Bjørn Wiinblad and Karin was employed there as a temp. Karin had completed her training as a ceramist at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. In 1964 they moved to Hou, to a house that became their home and workshop. As an artist couple Karin and Erik Heerwagen are known not only nationally but also internationally, because they exported one of their ceramic objects worldwide through the store 'Den Permanente' in Copenhagen. The store in Copenhagen was closed in 1981, after which they opened their own small store at home in Hou. Whether ceramics in pastel or natural color were fashionable, whether the trend dictated minimalist or baroque, Heerwagen never let it influence them. They stuck to their own simple Naïve expression with the characteristic round shapes as their hallmark.
