Pirouett model Desk Lamp, designed by J. Chavanis, France, Circa 1940

About the Item

Chromed brass desk lamp. Composed of a faceted shaft resting on a circular base, it has the particularity of having a tilting and adjustable arm, ending in a shade with sandblasted glass windows. Pirouett Lamp : The Pirouett lamp is a range of luminaires designed by Jean Chavanis in 1929, described as a portable electric lamp with a light that can be directed in all directions and an adjustable lamp height. These features were revolutionary at the time, and have evolved over the years. Our model features a ball-and-socket joint and a projecting ballast, an innovation that appeared after 1938. In these lamps, he wanted to combine the solidity of metal with glass plate apertures to create a functional, versatile lamp. Biography : Jean Chavanis is a designer from Lyon, France, where he began his career in 1924 with the invention of a tool holder for metal lathes. A prolific designer, he moved to Paris in 1930 to develop his brand and range of lighting after the success of the Pirouett lamp. He moved to Nice in 1939, where he continued to design, filing a final patent in 1941, but this didn’t prevent the brand from continuing into the 1960s.
