Rare Stout Double Gourd Table Lamp with Brushy Glazing by Arne Bang

About

Exceptional table lamp with compact double gourd form (cinched sphere) on a reveal foot, in stoneware glazed in gauzy strokes of bluish greens and green-brown, Denmark, 1920s-1930s. Painted artist mark and model number “45.”  Arne Bang (1901-1983) first became fascinated with Japanese ceramics when he saw them displayed at the 1925 Paris Exhibition, having joined his brother to assist in constructing Kai Fisker’s design for the Danish Pavilion. They would influence his ceramic designs throughout his career, including this early example. Lamp offered with original bronze harp with downward-facing socket, newly rewired and fitted with a new brown cloth cord. Height of ceramic is 9.5 in. (24 cm); height to top of harp is 17.5 in. (44.5 cm).
