Sculptural Murano glass table lamp by Vistosi, Italy 1960s

About the Item

Unique mouth blown table lamp. Attributed to Gino Vistosi. Made from one piece of Murano glass. The lamp is made from a glass tube that was folded together. This way it created a double layer of glass in the middle. The socket is located on one side of the lamp. This side is the brightest when lit while the other side has a dimmer light because it has to pass through the double layer of cream colored glass. the glass has lighter glass blown into it creating a beautiful striped pattern. The lamp is in original and very good condition. Vistosi Vistosi was founded by Guglielmo Vistosi in Murano in 1945 focusing on lighting. After his premature death his sons Gino and Luciano, joined their uncle Oreste in the founding of the Vistosi company. In 1956 Alessandro Pianon, a Venetian Architect, joined the company. Together with second generation Luciano and Gino Vistosi they gave a swing to the company focusing on innovation and design. The company has employed some very relevant designers such as Angelo Mangiarotti, Gae Aulenti. Peter Pelzel, Ettore Sottsass Jr., Adalberto Dal Lago. Vico Magistretti, Enrico Tronconi and so on. In 1989 Giancarlo Moretti, a businessman from Murano with a long experience in the glass sector with Vetrofond and Punto Luce, acquires the prestigious brand, giving birth to Vetreria Vistosi. In the 1990’s the factory closed for a couple of years. It was reopened by Matteo Moretti, Giancarlo’s son, who relaunched the Vistosi brand. During the same period Vistosi acquired the brands Alox, G2 and Triade. Today, the company still produces the most beautiful lamps, some of them old classics. Murano glass: In 1291 all the glassblowers from Venice were forced to move to Murano, due to the fire risk. It was also said that the intention was to better secure the secrets of glass blowing in this way. On penalty of death, glassblowers were forbidden to pass on their art; these people lived like prisoners on the island. Murano became famous for the glassware and also for the mirrors. Aventurine glass was also invented on Murano. Later, the island became famous for its candlesticks. In the eighteenth century, the industry declined, as glass art emerged in Bohemia. But even at the beginning of the twenty-first century, glass is still the most important industry on Murano. A well-known entrepreneur- artist of Murano glass was Archimede Seguso (1909-1999).
