Sol Sanctuary Table Lamp with Hand-Blown Opaline Bulb
About the Item
The sol sanctuary table lamp is an ode to French architectural theorist Etienne-Louis Boullée's monument to Newton. A spiritual shrine that turns out was impossible to build. Shaw Liu finds inspiration in this unrealised architecture, particularly its spherical body, which was intended to mimic the effects and day and night. It is the balanced art of light, dark and the in between.
This Art Deco light features a long, mirrored body, an exploration of the tangible and intangible. Reflections are phantom-like and can be inconsistent. Almost hallucinogenic, Sanctuary's hollow dome symbolises the eternal spirit of Newton, whilst its light is akin to a glowing moon. Best placed as a table lamp, its interior becomes aglow with the orb sat within it. This piece is an evolution of Sanctuary Illusion, which features a projecting light bulb.
Reminiscent of light bollards, crafted in hand polished stainless steel. It is made to be paired with an expertly crafted hand-blown opaline sphere bulb which radiates like the rising sun.
Striking and truly distinctive, it belongs in the company of equally remarkable objects, including the homes of the audacious, and as lighting for art studios. Shaw Liu crafted this monument as she believes everyone deserves to have a cenotaph within their midst. A monument dedicated to the purest part of one's soul, which can continue to live on.

- Illusion Sanctuary Projection Table LampLocated in London, GBIllusion Sanctuary is an ode to French architectural theorist Etienne-Louis Boullée's monument to Newton. A spiritual shrine that turns out was impossible to build. Shaw Liu finds inspiration in this unrealised architecture, particularly its spherical body, which was intended to mimic the effects of day and night. It is the balanced art of light, dark and the in between. This art deco light features a stout, mirrored body, an exploration of the tangible and intangible. Reflections are phantom-like and can be inconsistent. Almost hallucinogenic, Sanctuary's hollow dome symbolises the eternal spirit of Newton. As a table or floor light, it projects a golden halo upwards. Whilst the bulb itself is the source of light, it is not incandescent. This piece is an original design in Shaw’s series, she would later go on to create Sol Sanctuary which features a traditional, luminous opaline and alabaster light bulb. Reminiscent of light bollards, crafted in hand-polished stainless steel. It is made to be paired with a handcrafted glass bulb which helps project the light upwards. Striking and truly distinctive, it belongs in the company of equally remarkable objects, including the homes of the audacious, and as lighting for art studios. Marcelis’s focus is on allowing happenstance sensory experiences to emerge by juxtaposing combinations of unlikely materials and colors. She was educated at the Design Academy Eindhoven and since founding her eponymous studio in 2011 in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, she has built a remarkable roster of clients in fashion, architecture and art. Marcelis was invited to create a sculptural intervention for the interiors of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lily Reich’s iconic Barcelona Pavilion, which saw the debut of the pair’s timeless Barcelona chair in 1929. For her “No Fear of Glass” exhibition, the designer subverted the original request made to van der Rohe to “not use too much glass” by designing chaise longues, pillar lights and a fountain that feature glass as the main material. The rest of her work is informed by a similarly sophisticated playfulness, as evident in the charming forms she creates — she has designed doughnut-shaped rugs, the multifunctional resin Candy Cube side tables...Category

- Ligne Light 1, by Sabine Marcelis, Blown Glass, Neon Light, Glass Table LampBy Sabine MarcelisLocated in Beverly Hills, CAThe Ligne sculptures were made during a summer artist residency at Pilchuck school of glass. As with many of Sabine Marcelis's explorations with light, these objects were born from a curiosity to explore how a material volume can interact with a single line of light and in this case also how two very different ways of working with glass can elevate eachother. Together with talented neon benders, Sabine Marcelis hand-bent each of the neon lights to wrap around the various glass volumes, accentuating their mass and in turn, the glass volumes filtering the light.
