Striking Art Deco Table Lamp with Masterly Graded Crispé Glazing by Vinsare

About

Well-designed and well-crafted, this chic table lamp by the Sèvres-based firm Vinsare is one of the finest variations of the quintessential French Art Deco "ball"-type table lamp of the 1930s to have been made. The stoneware globe form is wonderfully sculpted with swaggering broad shoulders and an elegant taper. The two layered "crispé" surface, as favored by Jean Besnard, is masterfully executed using a pale gray matte underglaze to subtly contrast with the beaded waxy ivory resist layer above. Vinsare added an ingeniously gradation to the resist layer to concentrate along shoulders and reveal more of the underlying coral along the sides, creating a nice sense of depth and volume that comes to life when the illuminated. Vinsare Sèvres stamp underside. Such bravado glazing techniques were used at Visare to emulate the textures of exotic materials and were a central feature of their signature "luxe" Art Deco aesthetic. Visare, a re-branding of the former Manufacture Novelle de Faience of Sèvres (MVF) was launched in 1929 and closed 1942.
