Unique Hand Hammered Brass Lamp Wiener Werkstatte Karl Hagenauer Dagobert Peche

About the Item

Hand-hammered brass lamp Wiener Werkstatte attributed to Karl Hagenauer or Dagobert Peche circa 1920. Rare hand-painted original silk shade in immaculate condition. Most likely a studio piece by one of these important Viennese artists who both worked for Weiner Werkstatte and both worked with Joseph Hoffman, director and designer for the Werkstatte group. To find an original piece in this condition considering it is over 100 years old is a very special antique, It has been rewired and is ready for another 100 years of enjoyment. Dagobert Pech 1887-1923, worked with the Viennese School of Applied Arts. Met Joseph Hoffman after 1915, Peche started at the Wiener Werkstatte, where he worked as director of the branch office in Zurich. He produced over 3000 items and is considered one of the most important artists from this period. So he would fit into Vienna Secessionist, Wiener Werkstatte, and Art Deco. It was said he was the greatest ornamental genius in Austria. He was known for blending the dramatic embellishment of the Baroque with the tones and an upward sweep of the Gothic. He worked in many different media from lighting, ceramics, and fabric designs. Karl Hagenauer was an important and popular figure in the decorative arts in Vienna in the decades before the Second World War. After studying art and design at Vienna’s School of Applied Arts, where his teachers included architect Josef Hoffmann, a founder of the Wiener Werkstätte, he joined his father’s workshop in 1919 and began crafting items that reflected Hoffman’s modernist aesthetic. In the 1920s and ’30s, he developed an often-imitated style that combines the lines of Art Nouveau (known in central Europe as Jugendstil) with the simple, unadorned forms of Art Deco. He worked primarily in brass, both polished and nickel-plated as well as wood. Both artists worked in a similar style obviously, as I have here are examples of their work.
