The high quality vases are made of cast brass and stand on a square vase.

Neoclassicism was a movement in art at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in which the purported purity of the classics was again pursued.
Several important archaeological excavations, including the discovery of Pompeii (1748) and the discovery of the Rosetta stone (1799), greatly stimulated interest in classical civilization in the eighteenth century. The work of draftsmen that Napoleon Bonaparte had taken with him on his campaign to Egypt greatly captured the imagination of contemporaries. The writings of the archaeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann also played a key role.
