Art Deco Furniture

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

French Art Deco Glass Vase by Daum, Thick Blown Green Glass, 1930s
French Art Deco Glass Vase by Daum, Thick Blown Green Glass, 1930s

French Art Deco Glass Vase by Daum, Thick Blown Green Glass, 1930s

By Daum

Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR

A striking French Art Deco glass vase by Daum, crafted in Nancy, France, during the 1930s. This sculptural vintage vase is made from thick hand-blown glass in a rich green tone, with subtle internal bubbles and natural variations that give the surface exceptional depth and character. Its broad, asymmetrical silhouette reflects the refined modernism of the Art Deco period while retaining the organic quality associated with handcrafted French art glass. The substantial walls create a strong architectural presence, while the translucent green color shifts beautifully according to the surrounding light. Displayed near a window or under focused lighting, the vase reveals nuanced shades ranging from deep emerald to softer olive green. The base is signed “Daum + Nancy France,” confirming its authenticity and origin. Founded in Nancy in the late 19th century, Daum became one of France’s most celebrated glassmakers, renowned for its technical innovation, artistic experimentation, and collaborations with leading designers and artists. With its generous proportions and bold form, this Daum vase makes an impressive decorative statement on a console, sideboard, pedestal, mantel, or contemporary coffee table. It may be displayed as a standalone sculptural object or used for a restrained floral arrangement. The vase remains in very good vintage condition, with minor signs of age consistent with its period and use. An exceptional addition to a collection of Daum Nancy glass, French Art Deco decorative arts, 1930s design, or important European studio glass. Dimensions: Height: 7.5 in. (19 cm) Width: 8.7 in. (22 cm) Depth: 5.7 in. (14.5 cm) Maker: Daum Origin: Nancy, France Period: 1930s Material: Thick hand-blown and bubbled green glass...

23.3"D. Monumental Art Deco Volterra Alabaster Bowl Chandelier, Italy circa 1920

Located in Lisse, NL

Monumental, rare and breathtakingly beautiful Italian Art Deco alabaster bowl chandelier, circa 1920. This spectacular 4-light alabaster plafonnier is the kind of statement piece that can transform an entire room. With its impressive diameter of 23.3 inches, this is not just another alabaster chandelier, but a truly monumental and highly decorative centrepiece. The hand-carved alabaster bowl is richly decorated all around with deeply sculpted acanthus leaves, elegant ribbed panels and wonderful pearl-like beading. The warm amber-ochre accents in the deeper carved details give the design great depth and bring the relief carving beautifully to life. Also when unlit, this rare chandelier has the presence of a work of art, but once illuminated the translucent alabaster creates the warm, atmospheric and almost magical glow for which the finest Italian alabaster lighting is so highly loved. This fixture is very likely from the renowned alabaster tradition of Volterra, Tuscany, the historic centre of Italian alabaster craftsmanship. The bowl also bears a rare original round inset metal maker’s seal(picture 3) together with the hand-inscribed number 8152. The seal appears to show a stylised rearing horse or Pegasus above a monogram. These original markings are seldom found on alabaster lighting of this period and make this already impressive chandelier even more interesting and collectible. Large alabaster bowl chandeliers from the Art Deco period are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially in this size, quality and condition. With its palace-size proportions, sculptural design and warm natural stone, this chandelier would look amazing in an entrance hall, dining room, stairwell, boutique hotel, grand salon or high-end interior project. This antique Italian light fixture has been professionally restored and rewired. It currently comes as a beautiful 4-light chandelier and the original alabaster bowl is mounted with chains and an alabaster canopy. The height can be shortened or extended to suit your home or project. This fixture will also arrive wired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage. The alabaster has beautiful natural veining and some age-related lines, all consistent with antique natural stone and visible in the photos. This only adds to the authentic character and charm of this rare Art Deco work of beauty. If you like the rarity, size, quality and decorative power of this monumental Italian alabaster chandelier...
