Troy M. Stafford Hand Crafted 22K Gilded Looking Glass in Sapele Wood Frame

About the Item

A 22K gilded convex looking glass by contemporary Maine artist Troy M. Stafford (21st c). Troy Stafford is an artist that has lived on both the East and West Coasts and he currently resides in Brunswick, ME. Troy is a multifaceted artist that paints and creates using mixed media. He builds and creates extraordinary picture frames and is a furniture designer and maker. His work is in many private collections as well as in the permanent collections of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The New Britain Museum of American Art, Portland Museum of Art, North Carolina Museum of Art, and The Columbia Museum of Art among others. Artist Statement: “I have always been drawn to making things, the idea to make something where nothing had previously been felt right to me at an early age. Growing up in the desert I loved going to the dump site where people would leave things they no longer wanted. I would collect things that interested me, pieces of furniture, old papers, photographs. Using string and rudimentary tools I constructed environments for imaginary people to live in, houses made of wood, superheroes made of nails and flags. As a kid I discovered art. I was fascinated by it and would go to the library to get art books. Flipping through those books opened up a world to me that I had no idea existed. The idea that there were other people out there making things was beautiful to me. For a time I stopped constructing things and wanted nothing but to draw and paint. After attending a couple of art schools, I decided that school was not really for me. I wanted to make things, beautiful things, simple things, useful things. It did not really matter to me. I stumbled upon the traditional art of gold leafing and was intrigued by the process and wanted to know more. There was not much info out there on the craft, I found old texts and pored over them trying to figure it out. The other gilders I found were very secretive but I was persistent. After working at it for a few years I had figured out enough to begin to make some beautiful things. I started my own business in my early 20’s making frames for artists and collectors. I began working with museums and have had the fortune to make custom frames for works by many amazing artists, Botticelli, Titian, Van Gogh among others. My interest in creating art from the detritus that is commonly discarded never waned. I have continued to make furniture and artwork utilizing these things. There is something magical in the past, the paths that our lives have taken. I find such beautiful old photos, I love the challenge of creating something new and current with these old things. The past is constantly informing the future. In my paintings I like to use simple drawings to convey life’s many complicated emotions. My kids always drew such wonderful and expressive things with their stick figures and matchstick people. I have strived in my work to capture this simple expression. After 30 years of creating many beautiful and complicated things, I would like to combine all of these creative experiences, to distill something beautiful, meaningful, yet simple and childish. My hope is that these creations will connect with people in a heartfelt and meaningful way.” 22K gilded looking glass housed in a sapele wood frame with gilt highlight. Signed and dated on verso.
