About the Item

This is an elegant antique mirror that was made in mid-France in the late 19th century, 1881. It features the upper rounded corners typical for the Louis Philippe style. The mirror has a solid pine frame that was smoothened with gesso. The most elevated part of the frame has an intricate floral engraving and a classic pearl beading surrounds the glass. The frame has a slightly faded two-tone gold finish. The difference in gold-tone was achieved by polishing the convex parts to a higher degree than the concave parts. More polishing results in more gloss and a thinner gold layer that reveals more of the red bole undercoat. Furthermore, the mirror frame was patinated to enhance the definition. The mirror frame has built up a fantastic patina over the past years, adding charm to this sleek and authentic gold leaf gilt French mirror. The mirror plate is authentic and is a silver nitrate silvered mirror plate with brown-painted backing. On the painted backside of the mirror, there sits a marker’s stamp with the date 1881. The mirror is in good antique condition and shows a few small spots and light scratches and one larger spot top left center. The pine back cladding is authentic to the piece. The glass was removed from the frame and the whole mirror was gently cleaned of more than 100 years of gathered dust. The mirror is now clean, solid, and ready for use.
