Late 18th Century sconces, made in Sweden
About the Item
A pair of gustavian sconces, made in Sweden about 1790. The sconces have gilding with much of indigenous textures remains. The top is decorated with a beautiful, hand carved bow.
Gustavian style was the leading style in Swedish architecture, decor and crafts during the Gustavian era, inspired by French Neoclassicism. The style was established in the 1780s. The period is named after King Gustav III of Sweden, who spent a great deal of time at Versailles in 1771. When he returned home to Sweden, he brought with him a love of French neoclassical style. Gustavian furnitures are very popular in especially England but also in France and in US.
