Chinese Gilt Table Mirror, c. 1900

About the Item

With intricate construction and exquisite decoration, this late-19th century table mirror is a true masterpiece of Chinoiserie-style craftsmanship and lacquerware. Decorated in gilt, the black lacquered wooden frame was shaped, embossed and chiseled with lush foliage and dense scrollwork. The mirror stands on three legs with metal fittings at the back, likely to be secured to its original table structure. The back of the mirror also features a delicate all-over pattern of bamboo leaf-like etchings that create a sense of movement on the surface. This opulent mirror remains in excellent condition, living on today as a true one-of-a-kind artifact. Minor losses to lacquer finish.

Highly decorative and rare table mirror with classical Chinese decor. In all our years in this trade we never came accross an antique, Chinese table mirror. Since we cannot find another one anywhere in the world, we have nothing to compare it to. This makes it hard for us to determine whether this mirror was actually made in China (possibly for export) or that it is European made in the time when the chinoiserie style became popular. Mind you, 'popular' in those days meant that only the rich started decorating (parts of) their homes with this new exotic/oriental style. The two Chinese male figures depicted in the frame seem to be performing some kind of ritual. Apart from practical to use, this extremely decorative antique table mirror has many more Chinese style elements that make it a true pleasure to own and look at. Displayed on a sidetable, dresser or vanity this handcrafted, antique talking...
