Richly Carved French Louis XV Giltwood Mirror

About the Item

This magnificent antique oak frame is made in the Royal Louis XV style of the 18th century. Unlike most other highly decorated French mirror and painting frames, the motifs on this example are completely carved from wood (as opposed to gesso/stucco ornamentation). The gesso decor on mirror frames largely started in the 19th century. This high-relief frame is adorned with finely detailed shells, repeating at the corners and centers. It is 50 inches high and just under 40 inches wide. Frames from the Louis XV period featured extravagant decor, where curves and scrolls reigned supreme. Undulating elements such as curled leaves, scrolls, and shells, which were all featured heavily during the period, can be seen on this frame. Each corner is adorned with a large and imposing attenuated leaf and volute scrolls beneath a cupped acanthus leaf. Similar carvings grace the center of the straight edges, with a scalloped shell supplanting the attenuated leaf. Smaller curled leaves are situated between the corners and side carvings, with every element maintaining the symmetrical balance. This visually stunning frame most likely once surrounded a painting, but a beveled piece of glass has been added more recently. The result is a wonderfully carved Louis XV giltwood mirror that can be used with just about any decorative style.

Replacements made: The beveled mirror, while still old, is not original to the frame. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. Good strong antique condition, with wear commensurate to age and use, including minor losses, age separations, and rubs/touch-ups throughout. The mirror was added more recently (20th century). Wired in the back for hanging.
