Baroque mirror in gilded wood, Rome, Louis XIV.

About the Item

Splendid gilded wood mirror, Rome, Baroque period. Internal edge carved with myrtle garland, palmettes and rolled ribbon. Friezes and large twisted acanthus leaves, volutes and flowers at the high corners. Period: Louis XIV (1680-1740) Origin: Rome Material: golden wood frame, mercury mirror Baroque style Pure gold leaf In the seventeenth/eighteenth century the use of pure gold leaf was in use. Not to be confused with imitation gold leaf whose use began in the 19th century and in which only the effect of gold is felt. In fact, the 19th century leaf is made up of a mixture of three different alloys: copper, brass, zinc. Furthermore, it should not be confused with the so-called "Mecca" processing: silver covered with pigments from the Far East, invented in Naples in the 17th century. Measurements and materials Materials: Frame: this is wood covered with pure gold leaf. Not to be confused with the "Mecca" one, invented by the Neapolitans around the 17th century and composed of silver "dyed" with pigments from China. And from the "imitation" one, invented starting from the 19th century and composed of an alloy of copper, brass and zinc. Mirror: mercury glass (in use at the time) Dimensions: Light: 23 X 19 cm Dimensions: 72 x 58 cm *Please keep in mind that this work has not yet obtained the certificate of free export from Italy from the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage.
