Circa 1820 American Giltwood Mirror with Églomisé Panel Woodland Scene with Bird

About the Item

Circa 1820 giltwood architectural style looking glass with a reverse painted woodland scene eglomise tablet flanked with reeded columns, beading and appliques. Historian Rodric Blackburn writes that “the talent and some demand for such looking glasses was in Albany during the earliest years of the 19th century, but he adds that Albanians in the late 18th century were ordering much of their better furniture from New York City.” Contemporary newspaper advertisements indicate that these mirrors were manufactured both in Albany and New York City and that this style received considerable acclaim, accounting for the wide circulation of such looking glasses throughout New York State and beyond." A staple for fine American homes in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Some loss to the the back silvering of the mirror and the eglomise scene. Also note a slight bit of loss to giltwood. Not perfect, but still has the look of a great classic piece of early Americana.
